Photographic Archive
The Merchant's House is fortunate in having a substantial and growing archive of photographs of people, places and events in the town and surrounding parishes covering the last 150 years. As such it is a valuable and interesting research resource since the collection mirrors the way in which our way of life has altered over a relatively short period. We welcome donations of photographs likely to be of interest to the community.
It is being recorded on a database for easy access. There are several important individual collections, postcard collections and family photographs:
The Ramsbury Collection - prints from glass negatives of the people of Ramsbury from 1900 to the First World War, 1914-1918
The Kempson Collection - photographs by the Rev. R H Lane of Marlborough College. Features farm wagons and watermills together with images from the Second World War and the 1930s.
The Jim Dunford Collection - a local photographer who recorded the 1935 Coronation festivities in the town
The Victor Chinnery Collection - a very large collection of more than 1500 photographs of early oak furniture
The archive is kept up to date by recording events in the area, such as the historic features of a building before renovation or demolition; a 17th century farmhouse; fire damaged buildings; a recently found set of 17 century cellars under a modern building
