The Merchant's House Marlborough

THE ARTEFACTS and ARCHIVES at THE MERCHANT'S HOUSE

  • Five rooms are open to the public, showing 17th century furniture and fittings reflecting the life and times of the silk merchant, Thomas Bayly. The work is ongoing and objects are added to ensure the displays are not static.
  • The growing archive devoted to the town of Marlborough is supported by an active exhibition programme. There is a collection of 19th century political ephemera while businesses may be tracked through, for instance, the accounts of Elijah Lawrence, a draper whose business flourished between 1825 and 1832.
  • The Maurice family have been doctors in Marlborough for more than two hundred years and the medical practice is the oldest continuous family one in England. Old day books and equipment are only part of the family archives housed in the Marlborough Collection.
  • The works of Christopher Hughes, a topographical artist, show Marlborough at work and at play during the early years of the twentieth century.
  • The House and Marlborough Exhibitions are open to the public on advertised days.

The Archives may be visited by appointment. Please contact the Honorary Curator.
